Students at all levels—graduate and undergraduate—who are registered to present a poster on “tourism/heritage” at the SfAA Annual Meeting are encouraged to enter this competition. The competition honors Valene Smith, a pioneering figure in tourism studies and editor of the influential book Hosts and Guests: The Anthropology of Tourism (1977). Smith taught at Chico State University from 1967 to 1998, where she founded its tourism program and helped establish the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology. She was also an award-winning scholar and passionate supporter of applied anthropology.
