The Erve Chambers Tourism and Heritage Student Paper Award honors his contributions to the anthropology of tourism and heritage. This award encourages innovative research in these fields.
Students are invited to submit original research papers focused on “tourism” or “heritage” in broad terms. Topics may include heritage, archaeology and tourism, ecotourism, and cultural resource management. Selected top papers will be featured in a special session at the SfAA Annual Meeting, with cash awards of $300 for first place and $150 each for two honorable mentions.
Erve Chambers, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Maryland, College Park, has been instrumental in shaping the fields of tourism and heritage anthropology, as well as applied anthropology. He served as SfAA President (1987-1989) and founding editor of the journal Practicing Anthropology. His publications include Native Tours: The Anthropology of Travel and Tourism (2010), Tourism and Culture: An Applied Perspective (1997), and Applied Anthropology: A Practical Guide (1985), which are regarded as foundational works.
