Headshot of Victor MarcheziniVictor Marchezini is a social scientist at the Brazilian Early Warning and Monitoring Center of Natural Hazards (Cemaden/MCTIC), a professor and advisor at the Doctorate Program on Earth System Science, National Institute for Space Research (PGCST/INPE), and at the Graduate Program on Disaster Science (ICT/Unesp – Cemaden/MCTIC), Brazil. He was awarded a post-doctoral scholarship from São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) to be a visiting scholar at the Natural Hazards Center/University of Colorado-Boulder from July 2022 to June 2023. Over the past 20 years, Marchezini has focused on the social studies of disasters using qualitative research methods, especially ethnography, interviews, focus groups, and participatory mapping. From 2004 to 2011, he was a researcher at Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas Sociais em Desastres, Federal University of São Carlos (NEPED/UFSCar), Brazil, where he studied temporary shelter administration in disasters. Then he developed his Ph.D. dissertation focusing on disaster recovery in Brazil. He has experience coordinating international networks of researchers, such as the free e-book project, Reduction of Vulnerability to Disasters: from Knowledge to Action, which involved 87 researchers from 12 countries, captured in 28 chapters in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. He also has experience in action research projects involving community members and practitioners, such as the Elos Project, which gathered 1,993 municipal civil defense units in Brazil, as part of an international cooperation between the National Secretariat of Civil Defense and the United Nations Development Project (UNDP). He also works on facilitating inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge through the Webinar Series of the Brazilian Early Warning Center on YouTube Channel, with more than 2,000 subscribers (https://www.youtube.com/@seriededebatescemaden9218/streams). In September 2023 he started a new five-year project called COPE (Capacities of Organizations to Cope with Extreme Events), which will merge teaching, research, and university extension activities with people living in flood- and landslide-prone areas in the Paraiba River watershed, Brazil. He is also co-chair of the SAGE (Subseasonal Applications for Agriculture and Environment), an interdisciplinary project of the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP/WMO), and of the BRIC-BAC project, which is part of the BRICS STI Framework Programme.
