Margaret Mead was one of the most renowned anthropologists and public figures of her time. The Margaret Mead Award, established by the Society for Applied Anthropology in 1979 and jointly awarded with the American Anthropological Association since 1983, honors her legacy of making anthropology accessible to the public.
This Mead Award celebrates early career scholars (no more than 10 years past receipt of their doctorate) who have significantly contributed to sharing anthropological insights with a wider audience. Recipients are recognized for work that interprets anthropological research in ways that engage and inform the public through mediums such as books, films, or monographs.
