Dr. Lenore Manderson is Distinguished Professor of Public Health and Medical Anthropology, School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She joined as a member of faculty in 2014 after an extensive career in Australia.

Her research brings together interests in infectious disease and chronic conditions, structural inequality and social justice, gender and sexuality. She increasingly also works on climate change and the environment,  bringing together the creative arts, humanities and sciences.

Since 1988, she has served on advisory groups, committees and scientific consultations for TDR, WHO, the World Bank and other multilateral agencies, government entities in Australia and South Africa, and research programs, contributing to agenda setting, policy development and reviews nationally and internationally. These include work on neglected diseases of poverty and with various programs aimed at building capacity and addressing global knowledge inequalities.

Dr. Manderson was a member of the SfAA International Committee 2000-2003; Malinowski Award Selection Committee, Member 2003-2005 and Chair 2005-2007; Margaret Mead Award Selection Committee, Member 2016-2017 and Chair 2018; SfAA Global 2019-2023; and SfAA Board 2021-2023.

She is committed to supporting anthropologists in government, non-profit and for-profit sectors, and in interdisciplinary settings, so to impact policy, service design and delivery, and address challenges in social, political and economic life.
